Chris Brown might have a ton of drama going on in his personal life, but if there’s one thing that remains constant in his life it’s his dedication to performing. As the promo for his next album, X, continues to ramp up, Chris Brown pulled off a coup by securing the opening spot for the 2013 BET Awards. Opening with his lead single “Fine China,” Breezy does his usual theezy with the over-the-top choreography and the lip synching. While some people might complain about the pre-recorded vocals, trust me, he did y’all a favor. I don’t know if it’s the crack or his weed habit, but that boy’s live vocals are shot. After “Fine China,” Chris transitioned to his Aaliyah-assisted single “Don’t Think They Know.” He threw images of the late R&B star up on the screen as he vibed during the track. That whole anti-gang violence message he’s trying to shoehorn into the song still doesn’t make an iota of sense, but the track is smooth. So I’m with it. In a made-for-TV moment, Chris closed with a surprise appearance from Nicki Minaj for “Love More,” a new track from his album. The guest appearance was nice, but they stuck Nicki in a damn prop so she wasn’t able to unleash her kinetic energy. |

In the race for “White Boy of the Year,” Robin Thicke is doing quite well for himself with his hit single “Blurred Lines.” Robin Thicke has never been bigger than he is at this moment and he knows it. So he staged a monster of a performance for the 2013 BET Awards and he invited Pharrell, T.I. and a bevvy of beauties to tag along for the show. With a whip-sharp falsetto, Robin played to his strengths and avoided any awkward dance moves. Robin might believe his music is more “black” than Justin, but he moves like the awkward white boy that he is. But the groove to “Blurred Lines” is undeniable and Robin owns it. Although it was kind of awkward when Pharrell proclaimed that he loved black music while standing next to Robin Thicke. Isn’t that a bit like saying you love big women while standing next to Zoe Saldana? Posted by Daxx on 3july 2013 |

Forget what ya heard. It’s totally possible for a man band to work and Charlie Wilson, Pharrell Williams and Justin Timberlake proved this with their spectacular showing at the 2013 BET Awards. Charlie Wilson, or “Uncle Charlie,” as he’s affectionately known, has held it down for soul music for more than 30 years as the leader of the GAP Band. But he’s not been absent from the modern music scene thanks to his relationship with Pharrell, who put him on blazing hot tracks from the 2000′s like Snoop Dogg’s “Beautiful” and “Signs.” After accepting his legendary award, Uncle Charlie hit the stage and ran through his a catalog of his hits and features, but things really turned up a notch when Pharrell, Justin and Uncle Charlie got into the groove and just lit the stage on fire. Snoop Dogg/Lion, for whatever reason, stood around and largely observed the magnificence going on in front of him. Prior to Uncle Charlie hitting the stage, India Arie and Jamie Foxx tributed the R&B legend with their own performances. India’s glittered bell bottom jumpsuit was a perplexing fashion choice, but at least she stepped away from her Mother Earth image… a lil’ bit. |

Dressed like a Fabulous Freebird from the days of the NWA and WCW, Miguel performed his latest single, the creepy, date-rapeish “How Many Drinks” featuring Kendrick Lamar at the 2013 BET Awards. If you like jackets that look like they get regular perms, lots of screams and falsetto, and splits galor, this performance is for you. |

You’ve gotta give it to Ciara. Even though she’s
essentially been doing the same five to six steps since 2004, she damn
sure looked good throughout her set at the 2013 BET Awards. I’m all for Super C when she’s doing Magic City inspired R&B — particularly when it comes with a good prerecorded live vocal. Bless her for knowing when to sing live and when to not even bother torturing herself or the rest of us. Learn, Chris Brown. Learn. That said, get into CiCi’s performance of her new single, “I’m Out” featuring Nicki Minaj as well as her big R&B hit, “Body Party.” It’s really, really good and hopefully she continues to perform “Body Party” everywhere she can. I can go without hearing “I’m Out.” Yeah, just do “Super Turnt Up” or “Sophomore.” |

For his 2013 BET Awards performance, rap newcomer J. Cole — fresh off the release of his sophomore album ‘Born Sinner’ — went on a “Power Trip” with Miguel, and showed off his “Crooked Smile,” the latter being his latest single featuring TLC, who, for some reason, didn’t show up to sing the song’s infectious hook live. Bummer. |

Drake was a no-show at this year’s BET Awards, despite him nabbing at least a dozen nominations and being the recipient of the Viewer’s Choice Award and the award for Best Collaboration (for A$AP Rocky’s “F**kin Problem”). The rumor leading up to the show (thanks, Twitter) was that Drake did in fact plan to attend the show, but decided to skip out at the last minute because he wanted to avoid running into Chris Brown. But Drake took to Twitter after the show to quell the rumors and thank fans for his award. |

He may have served as tour DJ for Kanye West, known to be a good pal of Jay-Z, but the close association did not stop DJ A-Trak from making some unflattering comments about the Roc Nation mogul’s recent Samsung TV commercial. The Fool’s Gold Records founder/producer thought it was all too “corny.”
“That Samsung sh** is corny,” A-Trak tweeted Monday morning, June 17, about the way Jay-Z announced his new album’s release through a Samsung smartphone commercial. The DJ seemed to disagree with other Twitter account users, mostly rappers too, who commented rather favorably on Hov’s latest move, like Soulja Boy who thought “that Jay-Z commercial was dope.”
Perhaps DJ A-Trak got irked with Jay-Z’s timing, if morning show host Peter Rosenberg’s tweet got it right, that “JayZ has managed to overshadow the biggest week of hiphop releases of the year and his album doesn’t come out til mid July,” that album being West’s “Yeezus”. Jay-Z’s Samsung commercial came out at halftime of the NBA Finals game on Sunday night, on the eve of Yeezy’s new album debut.
Record producer Polow da Don may have summarized the sentiments of Jay-Z’s bashers, putting it rather bluntly by tweeting, “Roc*Nation is greatness…the rest of these ni**az are scared and steady kissin these crackaz a**…”

Halibut twice a day. Steak twice a day. So much broccoli. Worth noting: He's not actually drinking lion's blood. If you remember back to Greek mythology, Hercules is charged by King Eurystheus with slaying of the Nemean Lion. It's a part of the movie, guys. We're going to go feel bad about our pizza lunch now. |

Here we go again. Lil’ Mama is out on the corner begging for a handout from more relevant and famous rappers. In an interview with The Hollie Wood and Friends Show on Blog Talk Radio, Lil’ Mama spilled her guts about landing the role of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in the upcoming TLC biopic. The topic inevitably moved on to Lil’ Mama’s take on the state of female rappers. And whenever we talk about female rappers these days, Nicki Minaj’s name MUST be mentioned. Necole Bitchie got the transcript from the interview, and according to Lil’ Mama, Nicki owes it to other female rappers to “put them on.” It’s a lot of underground women who are trying to break through, but on a mainstream level the only person that I really hear on radio is Nicki Minaj. A lot of times I hear her say, “I do this for women” and “I’m doing this for all of us” while she’s accepting a BET Award, but other than that I don’t see her putting any other women on. I don’t see her on tracks with other women that are current. I don’t see her embracing any other women. I feel like its time for female MC’s to really start sticking together and start putting out some music.Uh huh. Truth be told, it’s true that Nicki doesn’t rock with other female rappers on wax, but the truth should also be told that Lil’ Mama spent a good chunk of her time throwing shade at Nicki Minaj too. Back in 2011, after Nicki Minaj made a guest appearance on Lil’ Mama’s last paying gig as host of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, Lil’ Mama ran her mouth and accused the Young Money femcee of stealing her style in an interview with VIBE. Yeah, she was a guest on America’s Best Dance Crew and immediately afterwards, everywhere she went, she was wearing the haircut, the same exact way. But that doesn’t make me feel like ‘Oh she’s trying to be down’ like how I said about our culture. I’m actually flattered because she imitated me and it felt like something that I was doing was cute and in time for the fashion and for the season, so it’s like let’s live, let’s do it.Right. So before Lil’ Mama begs for some of Nicki Minaj’s spotlight, she should try to cut down on her shade. |
